Wishing everyone a Happy New Year -- 2021!

Dear Members,

Wishing
all a Happy New Year! SingaporeConnect started the Covid-19 Forum series in 2020 to highlight its seriousness and to support those affected in our community.
23 forums later, we've learnt so much more, from antigens to zoom. We would like start 2021 on a hopeful note, by renaming the series to simply the SingaporeConnect Forum, and continuing to bring a whole host of topics to you, starting with some serious ones first:

US Taxation

Financial and Insurance Planning

and of course, some social and food-oriented online events to come.
As always, we thrive on the support and volunteerism of our members. Reach to us if you can help in any way and may we look forward to a better New Year!

SGConnect Covid-19 Forum #23: Are vaccines ready?

Dear Members,

Vaccines! Are they ready?

There has been quite a bit of excitement from recent news on the Covid-19 vaccine development front. Many of us have been hoping for successful vaccine(s) to be able to put this pandemic behind us and return to some sense of normalcy. But there may be nagging questions about what safe and effective vaccines really mean in the light of the unprecedented pace of development.

We are pleased to have for our 23rd Forum a speaker who has extensive exposure and experience on the subject of viruses and vaccines. He will present a data-driven update on the progress of the Covid-19 vaccine candidates, discuss the concerns you may have, and take your questions.

Here's a snapshot of the questions we've received so far:

  • 1) How can I help a poor person in another country to receive the vaccine the same time as I do?
  • (2) If a company makes vaccination mandatory for all its employees, does one have a legal right to opt out?
  • Are there any concerns that companies are using mRNA based vaccines rather than the traditional types of vaccines?
  • Should vaccination be optional if you choose to opt for safe distancing and/or mask wearing?
  • Should we be concerned about the long term effects (if any) of the Covid 19 vaccine, given the lack of such data currently for any Covid 19 vaccine? Are the various Covid 19 vaccines able to confer long term immunity, i.e. trigger memory T cells? Is there a comparison chart of the various Covid 19 vaccines from different countries that are in the pipeline, e.g nature of the antigen, adjuvant, side effects etc?
  • The vaccines don't promise to limit transmission at this point. Should we be concerned if they only help stop severe cases but not transmission?
  • What are the typical serious side effects?
  • What implications will a 80-90% efficacy rate have on working life going forward?
  • What percentage of the population needs to be vaccinated to allow us to safely mingle normally.
  • When will pediatric vaccines be available?
  • Yes, what is the likely effect of these particular vaccines on people who have already had covid19? Is there a possibility this could be like dengue fever and second exposure is more lethal?

At the end of the survey, you'll see the Zoom registration information.

SingaporeConnect Covid-19 Forums: update on future topics

Dear Members,

We've been working on future forums and the top three topics requested are tax, insurance and financial planning.
Please reach out if you have familiarity, especially with the last topic, and would like to share with our community. The topic is highly requested.

Past forums are viewable on our Youtube channel: http://sgc-covid19.msky.org

Other topics we're working on include an update on vaccine development, making Singaporean desserts at home, and, digging into our arts side, something we've been trying to get hold of for months given her busy schedule, a session with a Singapore-based actress, singer, radio DJ, talk show host, theatre lecturer, with a topic possibly on using your voice and presenting.

Do share any additional thoughts on topics you'll like to see, comments, and if you can help, in any way, at:

https://forms.gle/wSYEECZs7ZFaUT8K9

Thank you, and stay safe and healthy.

SGConnect Covid-19 Forum #20: Great SingaporeConnect Workout

Let's exercise!
We are pleased to have Nicol Pang, who will lead us through stretches and exercises you can do right at home. Yes, you read that right, we've gone from "eating mooncakes" to "burning calories" this time.
Nicol was raised in Singapore and is a former accountant/data analyst turned full-time personal trainer and group fitness instructor who has been adapting to teach virtually during this pandemic. We are fortunate to have her on board to help you achieve your fitness goals in the first-ever SingaporeConnect online workout!
We hope the session will be energetic and interactive, stretch your limbs and maybe even get your heart rate pumping. Please wear comfortable exercise clothing, try set up your computer/phone where you have some space to follow along and exercise, and have water available! Of course, you're welcome to just sit back, relax, and watch, but we hope many of you will give it a go to join us for our first-ever online workout.
While you can jump straight to registering, we wonder if you can help detail how you've been approaching staying fit pre-pandemic and now. We will aggregate the results to share at the Forum, and we hope it will give everyone some useful info on the state of exercise (and hopefully not lack of) in our community. It will also be helpful for Nicol to understand a bit more about you as a group!
At the end of the survey, you'll see the Zoom registration information.
See you this Sunday, 18 Oct 20, 4.00 pm - 5.30 pm PT! Note the 4.00 pm timing - so you can exercise before dinner.

SGConnect Covid-19 Forum #17: Emergency Preparedness

Edited

Dear Members,

When this series of forums started, Covid-19 was the emergency. We wanted to alert everyone to get prepared to take it seriously. Then, the Forums have taken off as a means for our community to get together in this time of social distancing. The wildfires of late have added a different sort of emergency to be prepared for, like, instead of being asked to shelter-in-place, what if you had to evacuate and seek emergency shelter? This led us to think of a topic for the next Forum:

Wondering if you're ready for an emergency? What should you best take with you if you only have 15 mins to evacuate, or perhaps even an hour? What is a good checklist of things to have in the event of an emergency like an earthquake - for different family sizes? How do you best prepare for insurance claims etc? How do you get information on emergencies and keep in touch with needed resources?

In our 17th SingaporeConnect Covid-19 Forum this Saturday, we welcome back again Adrianna Tan (Director of Product Management for San Francisco Digital) from the City of San Francisco to share some advice.

This session will be interactive, as members share our best tips for emergency preparedness.

To join the forum, please complete our survey here where you can also add any questions -
https://forms.gle/2V2mUyMqdxnE5F6k8

At the end of the survey, you'll see the Zoom registration information.

SGConnect Covid-19 Forum #15: The Economy with Dr Jamus Lim

Edited

Dear Members,

What are the global economic implications of COVID-19? How have countries, including Singapore, acted thus far? How is the situation likely to evolve given the policy actions so far?

In our 15th SingaporeConnect Covid-19 Forum this Saturday, we are pleased to welcome Dr Jamus Lim, Associate Professor of Economics at the ESSEC Business School, to share his perspectives on the economic implications of Covid-19. Jamus was previously the chief economist of ThirdRock Group, an independent investment advisory; the lead economist at the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, and a senior economist at The World Bank.

But closer to most of us in the Bay Area, did you know Jamus spent several years at Santa Cruz, CA, where he was a teaching fellow at the UC Santa Cruz, then a research associate at the Santa Cruz Institute for International Economics? Some of us may recall he even participated in the Singapore National Day celebrations back then.

We do anticipate this forum may be rather popular, given our past surveys where we found that the number one topic requested for (topping cooking classes), was for an economics speaker. Therefore, we will prioritise registrations for SingaporeConnect members and those in the SF Bay Area.

To join the forum, please complete our survey here where you can also add any questions for Jamus. Accepted registrants will receive a follow-up email with the Zoom registration information.

SGConnect Covid-19 Forum #14: SF.Gov Updates

Jasmin Young

Dear Friends,

SingaporeConnect's Covid-19 Forum series is on again this coming Sunday with
Forum #14: SF.Gov Updates
Sunday, July 26, 8 - 9pm PDT
https://forms.gle/UF9DoPSNvu82PgQg6 (Survey and registration link)

Need access to Covid-19 resources in San Francisco? Unsure about the latest CA guidelines or what the requirements/best practices are to socializing, going out or re-opening your business? Curious about how the City of San Francisco is managing their SF.gov initiative to communicate, and how they developed their first Covid-19 testing app? Have suggestions for other services SF.gov should have?

In our 14th SingaporeConnect Covid-19 Forum this Sunday, we'll be introducing a Singaporean who has been driving most of SF.gov's public facing initiatives -- bringing public needs and digital skills into the mix.
Adrianna Tan, Director of Product Management at SF.gov will point us to key resources available and the story behind how some of these services have been developed.
We're constantly amazed and proud by all the impact Singaporeans are making through Covid-19!

Please complete our usual survey to share your perspectives on Covid-19 so far - and any suggestions for SF.gov. It will help give more context to the guest speakers who have taken their time to join us. Your answers also help frame the direction of the forum, and give us all more insights about our community.

At the end of the survey, you'll get a link to register for the call on Zoom.
Please save the sign-on link provided by Zoom after registration. To get a good level of participation on the survey, if you like to share this forum, please opt to share this link to the survey, instead of your personalized Zoom link to the call.

Thank you for your ongoing support - and for stepping up to share your expertise and experiences!
Looking forward to connecting again this Sunday at 8pm PT!
